Awareness on solid waste management kicks off

MANGALORE: As part of the continuing action plan, an awareness week on `Solid waste management' organized by the department of commerce, St Agnes College, kicked off at the college on Monday.

The executive committee members of the community awareness campaign on solid waste management (SWM) took oath and took out a rally inside the campus with banners and placards.

In the next one week, the members will organize several programmes connected with awareness on managing solid waste at the college. On Tuesday, there will be a paper bag making competition and on Wednesday, a video show on SWM. On Thursday, there will be an exhibition `Wealth from waste' and on Friday, a tableau on waste management.

Also, the value education hour will feature an awareness programme for degree students from Wednesday to Friday.

Devi Prabha Alva, staff coordinator, said waste management in urban areas was becoming unmanageable and there was a need to educate people about the importance of effective management of solid waste. She said that throwing garbage without any civic sense causes problem to human beings and animals.

She said the commerce students have taken this up as an extension activity. The programme had been inaugurated by city corporation commissioner Vijay Prakash on March 23, this year.
