Bangalore's garbage management to be outsourced

BANGALORE: After Mandur and Mavallipura, it is now the turn of villagers in the surroundings of Anekal to bear the stink of the city's garbage.

The villagers of Bingipura have filed a PIL against BBMP to prevent the garbage dumping yard coming into their vicinity. Bingipura is one of the villages near Anekal where BBMP has been given 20 acres of land by the government. On Tuesday, mayor S K Nataraj, BBMP commissioner Siddaiah and other senior officers and corporators visited Bingipura. The villagers made their voice heard before BBMP's delegation.

Speaking to TOI, Siddaiah said that the process to establish automated garbage segregation and processing unit is already on. "The villagers feared that we would dump garbage in the village. We have tried to convince them and dispel their apprehension. We have heard their grievances. Garbage will not just be dumped there, but it will be processed," said Siddaiah.

BBMP will shortly float tenders related to solid waste management. "There are plans to install two biogas plants to process garbage in KR Market. In the surroundings of Anekal, we want to start automated garbage segregation units. For these projects there would not be any out go from BBMP, except for the biogas plant. These project will not harm the surrounding areas as the modules that wer are planning for are environmental friendly and hassle free," the commissioner added.

A similar delegation had visited Thimmanaikanahalli and Bagganadoddi villages near Anekal last week and inspected land that can be used for the solid waste management project. Opposition was faced in these villages too. In 2003, the government had announced that BBMP will be giving 700 acres of land in the surroundings of the city. So far 350 acres are granted and the rest is yet to be given to the civic agency.
