BBMP for waste segregation at source; stress is on people's participation

BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) appears to be serious about implementing “segregation at source” as Deputy Mayor N. Dayanand announced that the palike has plans to introduce about 30 segregation units provided there is availability of land and people's participation.
Taking part in a programme to create awareness about the topic at Aramane Nagar here on Sunday, Mr. Dayanand said the initiative would go a long way in making the city a zero-garbage zone. “The citizens should remember that it is we who generate waste and thereby, it becomes our responsibility to dispose of waste in an effective way,” said Mr. Dayanand.
C.N. Ashwath Narayan, MLA from Malleswaram, said that hindrances to this initiative such as shortage of manpower, compactors, vehicles and portable gadgets were now taken care of.
‘Garbage a goldmine'
Councillor of Aramane Nagar ward M.S. Shivaprasad equated garbage to a goldmine as it generates money at a later stage which can be used for other development works.
As a part of the programme, two dustbins — blue for wet and yellow for dry waste — were distributed to 100 houses.
The programme also threw light on the benefits of effective waste management such as recycling and reusing of plastic and fuel and energy saving.
“Wet waste can be recycled and used as manure (biogas), while dry waste can be recycled to get crude oil.
“It is important to keep not only our house clean but also our surroundings,” said BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah.
The Commissioner also mentioned that citizens have a major role to play in curbing the stray dog menace as people often abandon their old pets, especially dogs.
