Cash for proper waste disposal

The Tripunithura Municipality has decided to implement waste management proposals introduced in the 2013-14 annual budget this month. According to the municipal authorities, discussions are progressing in this regard under the aegis of the Health Department.

As part of the decision, the proposal to grant cash awards and certificates to hotels and flats that treat waste properly will be implemented soon. “A  monitoring committee has been formed to implement the proposal. The  committee will divide the hotels in the area into three categories taking account of its infrastructure capacity. Flats will be considered as another category. Each category will be given grades based on their efficiency in waste management. The committee will also conduct monthly inspection at flats and hotels. The hotels and flats that bag highest grades will be given the awards,” said S Vidyadaran, health supervisor, Tripunithura Municipality.

He added that the municipality will suggest perfect waste-treatment systems at hotels, flats, private firms, public firms that lacks one.

“The `1 lakh earmarked in the budget will be used to implement the project. The committee has fixed the first prize at `10,000. The second and third price will be `5,000 and `3,000, respectively, to each category,” he added.

Moreover, the committee will encourage the treating of waste at its source in the municipality. “In the pilot project, as many as 4,000 pipe composts will be distributed. A catalyst will also be suggested to speed up the waste treatment in the pipe compost,” he said.

He added that solid food wastes from the houses will be collected and taken to the Brahmapuram waste treatment plant.

 “Residents will have to pay `1 for taking one kg waste. The municipality is searching for land to set up waste dumping yard,” Vidyadaran added.
