AMC plans 100 meetings to curb littering

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to complete hundred interactive public meetings this month to create awareness about maintaining sanitation standards. The civic body has increased the quantum of fine considerably over the time. But the penalties, ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000, await state government's approval.

Dr Suhas Kulkarni, Medical Officer (Health) at the AMC, acknowledged on Sunday that after initiating a levy of heavy fines for littering in residential areas, the civic administration had been facing resistance from the people.

"We have engaged the Indian Red Cross Society volunteers and one private agency to conduct interactive meetings with the public in localities where littering is seen more," said Dr Kulkarni.

According to Dr Kulkarni, the walled city is the most problematic area where littering is a common sight.
