Health inspectors to monitor garbage in wards

With the focus back on solid waste management what with the Zero Garbage project taking off in 12 wards, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will now rope in the health inspectors to monitor the 198 wards in the city.

That apart, the BBMP will involve residents’ welfare associations (RWAs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to streamline the solid waste management system in 22 wards that will soon be brought under the Zero Garbage project. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will launch the project in these new wards by July-end.

These decisions were taken at the expert committee meeting here Tuesday. The meeting decided that garbage tenders that will be floated soon will include the Zero Garbage project norms.

The BBMP will also set up an industries’ and vendors’ empanelment body for recycling and reusing dry waste that will include plastic covers/bags, glass/plastic bottles, metals and rubber to reduce the load on landfills and dump yards, a senior official said.

The civic authority will soon issue another public notice directing bulk generators, including hotels and marriage halls, to manage their waste in situ .

“The BBMP is yet to fix the quantity, that is, if waste is above a certain quantity the bulk generators will have to process it on their own. Anything below that may be handed over to the civic authority,” the official added.
