Mayor B S Sathyanarayana’s decision to involve college students in K R Market clean-up drive attracted wrath from many opposition Councillors, during the Council meeting on Monday.

JD(S) floor leader R Prakash asked Mayor how he can involve college students to clean the market. “Will you involve your children to clean up the market? The BBMP does not have sufficient funds to give money under medical relief grants. If something happens to these children, will BBMP help them?” he asked.

Prakash said elected representatives are present if students from schools and colleges are involved in any public functions. “We take students’ help for our publicity sake. But involving them to clean the market has crossed all limits,” he said. “Do you (Mayor) see garbage only at K R Market? Do you feel that other parts of City are clean?” he questioned.

Siddapura Councillor, Udayshankar, questioned the Mayor’s decision to involve students and NGO members to clean the market. “BBMP has its own pourakarmarkas. Why can’t pourakarmikas working in nearby wards be involved for one day in a week?” he asked. Replying to questions, the Mayor said he is going to hold a meeting to discuss the issue.
