New hurdles for GHMC in acquiring dump yard

Nov. 25: After facing stiff opposition from local farmers, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is facing fresh hurdles in taking over 723 acres of land in Nalgonda district for a garbage dumping yard.

A former Congress minister from Nalgonda is apparently averse to the idea of the dump yard in his district. Despite the GHMC writing several times to hand over the site, the Nalgonda district collector is stalling the matter, reportedly under pressure from the ex-minister and local farmers.

The state government had issued a GO in July, allocating 723 acres of land in Malkapur village of Choutuppal Mandal in Nalgonda to the GHMC for turning it into a scientific garbage disposal site.

The delay in taking over the site in the meantime is prolonging the sufferings of the families living around the Jawaharnagar dump yard. Families living in Rajiv Gruha Kalpa Apartments near the Jawaharnagar dumping yard and the colonies of Jawaharnagar, Ahmedguda, Nagaram, Hardaspalli and several villages en route to the dump yard have been complaining of ground-water, air and noise pollution besides having to live with the stink of garbage.

The GHMC additional commissioner Mr S.K. Aleem Basha said they were writing again to the Nalgonda revenue authorities to hand over the site. “We need three to four sites for garbage dumping yards,” he added.

Jhuriwala waste mgmt plant gets environment ministry clearance

PANCHKULA: The final hurdle in the way of solid waste management plant at Jhuriwala village in Panchkula district has finally been crossed as the project got the environment ministry clearance on Wednesday.

With this, garbage dumping in Panchkula, Kalka and Pinjore will no longer be an issue as plant will rid the towns of open dumping and eye sores. It is estimated that the project, with a life span of 25 years, will kick off within six months and by December 2012 it would be functional. The plant is being constructed by Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) under BOT (Built operate transfer) basis. It also plans to make fertilizer from the garbage collected.

Though HUDA had got clearance from the Air Force, pollution control board and wildlife department, it took almost two years to meet environment ministry conditions and get the clearance. A senior HUDA official said, 'The expert committee of environment ministry in its final hearing on November 9 gave the clearance.' Prior to this, HUDA officials had submitted the project report four times but the proposal was shot down by the expert committee. Besides, HUDA held two public hearings in Panchkula to register public views and objections over the project. The completion of the project will bring relief to residents of sector 23 to 28 as HUDA and MC are presently dumping garbage in an open ground in sector 23.

Stay against setting up treatment plant

Lalur residents to resume their agitation

Thrissur: The Lalur Malineekarana Viruddha Samara Samithi here on Tuesday urged Mayor I.P. Paul to convene an urgent meeting of the implementation committee of the Lalur Model Project for Solid Waste Management (LAMPS).

“The implementation committee should chalk out a plan to clear the hurdles ahead of the project. Some people with vested interests are trying to torpedo the Lalur Model Project. Our agitation is for the right to fresh air and pure drinking water. The garbage issue has been politicised,” the samithi alleged in its plea.

The work under LAMPS was stopped after the Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi obtained a stay against setting up a regional treatment centre at Sakthan Thampuran market.

The samithi reiterated its decision to resume its agitation from November 30 if the authorities failed to take appropriate measures to vacate the stay.
