Top, consistent tax payers felicitated in

RAJKOT: In order to encourage tax payers, Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) felicitated top and consistent tax payers in the city at a function here on Monday night. The tax payers were felicitated by minister of state for health Parbat Patel.

The function was part of the state's official Independence Day celebration underway in the city and district. Speaking on the occasion, Patel said that financial strength is the backbone of any government civil body, to help it to carry out various developmental works in the city. The major source of this finance comes from various taxes paid by the citizen.

"It's required that tax payers pay regular taxes to the corporation and, thus, become a part of the development process of their city, taking it towards fast-growing urbanisation,'' Patel added. "The tax payers in the city have played an important role in the development of the city with regular and consistent tax paying. These top and consistent tax payers will inspire others to follow suit,'' former city mayor Dhansukh Bhanderi said.

According to RMC officials, during the year 2007-08, RMC had set Rs 62 crore as target and collected Rs 80 crore in civic taxes. RMC collected Rs 97 crore in 2008-09 and Rs 164 crore in 2009-10 as taxes.

Representatives of Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum, Shri Nathji Trust, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HJ Still Industries, DP Patel builders, Chartered Bank were among those who were felicitated on the occasion.

"For the first time, we have identified highest tax payers who have been consistent for last five years without fail. This initiative is a part to recognise the law-abiding citizens,'' said senior RMC official.
