Ahmedabad:  Professional Tax collection for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has shown a 35 per cent increase in September 2010 over the corresponding period in 2009. This follows the civic body’s move to spread its tax net over the 3.50 lakh professionals in the city. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Arjav Shah said a major factor to this was the success on AMC’s part to convince 12,800 LIC agents in Ahmedabad to pay Professional Tax.

He said AMC had collected Rs 9.19 crore as Professional Tax in September 2009, which shot up to Rs 12.39 crore this September. During the April-September 2010 period, Profession Tax collection was Rs 36.09 crore ¿ an increase of 25 per over the corresponding period in 2009. Shah has now drawn up future plans to further widen the tax collection base.

“Our next plan is to include around 2,100 advocates who are practising in the High Court, in this category. Many of them have agreed and we now propose to hold a special camp in the High Court premises on October 25,” said Shah. He said the west zone topped in Professional Tax collection while the minimum came from the east zone.

He added that AMC was doing everything in its capacity to win the trust of the professionals that the objective of tax collection was not harassment, but raising the corporation’s revenues to finance its future development projects.

He further said that AMC was also issuing notices to registered professionals to pay the tax within the stipulated time, adding that this tax had become a major source of income for the civic body following the ban on Octroi in 2007.
