Civic body confiscates 68 properties of tax defaulter

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has confiscated 68 properties in
different parts of the city, in a fresh drive against property tax defaulters.
Owners of the properties have failed to pay the dues for several years despite the civic administration issuing them legal notices.
A civic official said, "The confiscated properties will be auctioned on March 18 and 20 if the owners fail to pay their arrears. The total tax due for the 68 properties is Rs17.26 lakh." He said the tax arrears range from Rs 5,000 to Rs 69,000. Most of the defaulters are on Gangapur Road.
The official said, "The action is part of our drive against those who don't pay tax regularly and have dues pending for a long duration. We plan to recover the maximum possible property tax dues before the end of the current financial year," he said.
The NMC had set a property tax recovery target of Rs 95 crore for 2012-13, but has collected only around Rs 37.7 crore.
Meanwhile, of the 230 properties confiscated earlier, 77 property owners have paid the dues.
"There has been no response yet for the auction. We will charge the remaining defaulters 24% interest per year as penalty," said Panchavati divisional officer R R Gosavi.
