Civic body to crack the whip on defaulters

Special Correspondent

Confiscating moveable properties is also an option

Corporation may issue newspaper notification of those who owe huge sums

Special teams pressed into service to expedite tax collections

TIRUPATI: Apparently taking the cue from the government, authorities of the Tirupati Municipal Corporation are bracing themselves to crack the whip on defaulters of various taxes payable to the Corporation and make them cough up the arrears.

If the release issued by the Commissioner of the Corporation, P. Mohan Reddy, is any indication, the corporation is preparing to get tough with the defaulters by such punitive measures as disconnecting water supply to their premises, confiscating their moveable properties besides initiating legal proceedings to make them clear the bills and arrears towards property tax, tap tax, underground drainage tax, vacant land tax and so on. The Commissioner said that the Corporation also would be constrained to issue newspaper notification of those who owe huge sums towards the various taxes. On the positive side, it has already posted the tax notices to all the households besides providing them facility to pay the bills either at the online counters or in any of the five e-seva centres in the city. He said there would be zero interest on the taxes payable for the second half of the fiscal 2009-10 if paid before December, 30. He said as per the District Collector’s orders to expedite tax collections, special teams were pressed into service on the job.
