GHMC tax raids in full swing

HYDERABAD: Continuing the drive against top property tax defaulters, officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Monday swooped down on the Balayogi Paryatak Bhavan of the APTDC that houses the Katriya Hotel besides targeting a few other establishments in Begumpet and Ameerpet areas of Circle X.

GHMC staff led by Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Circle X, Ravi Kiran descended on the hotel and asked the management to clear the dues of Rs 1.18 crore that included current tax, arrears and penalty.

As there was no response from the management side, the tax and enforcement wing of the GHMC seized the premises and took away the movable properties like computers, servers, sofa sets, furniture and 15 other articles in their vehicles to the Central Zone office at Khairatabad. Ravi Kiran said the hotel officials had promised to clear the dues by evening but none had come to the GHMC office till dusk.

Later, the enforcement team went to Vijay Textiles in Ameerpet which owed tax to the tune of Rs 8 lakh. As the GHMC staff started seizing the articles and shifting them into the vehicles, the owner issued a cheque on the spot.

From there, the team went to Axxom Hospital located in SN Colony, Ameerpet and took possession of the property. The hospital management immediately issued a cheque for the tax arrears of Rs 21 lakh to the GHMC officials following which the warrant on them was lifted.

With just a few days left for the current financial year to end, the GHMC has decided to take stringent against the defaulters of property tax.

The officials, for the next three weeks, will target top defaulters who owe above Rs 5 lakh in tax arrears to the GHMC.

GHMC to crack down on top tax defaulters

HYDERABAD: With just a few days left for the current financial year to end, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to take stringent action against defaulters of property tax.

The GHMC will for the next four weeks target top defaulters who owe above Rs 5 lakh - there are over 500 in this list.

Through them, the GHMC is expecting to realise Rs 100 crore by this month-end.

Senior GHMC officials told Expresso that these property owners have become regular defaulters and there’s no way they would be spared this time.

Tax inspectors, revenue inspectors and valuation officers have been given specific, circlewise targets for the 18 circles.

The top 60 defaulters with over Rs 5 lakh arrears from each circle will be dealt with seriously. The GHMC has already issued four lakh notices under sections 266 and 268 of the HMC Act, including red notices under 269 to a few thousand defaulters asking them to pay the arrears failing which the GHMC would be forced to attach their properties.

“Our intention is not to harass the public.

If they clear the dues, it would help GHMC in taking up developmental activities for betterment of the city,” GHMC Additional Commissioner (Finance), N Satyanarayana said.

The GHMC has so far collected Rs 350 crore for 2009-10 and another Rs 290 crore, including dues from government properties, has to be collected by this monthend, he said. Of the 12 lakh properties in the GHMC limits, nearly four lakh are yet to be assessed for property tax. Even if 50 percent of them are brought into the tax net, the GHMC would get Rs 300 crore more annually.

GHMC seals Hyderabad Central, nets Rs one crore

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Tuesday sealed the Hyderabad Central, located in the busy Punjagutta area, as the owner of the shopping complex, SBPL Infrastructure, GSG Group, failed to clear property tax dues to the tune of Rs 2.8 crore accumulated since 2006.

Later, GHMC withdrew the warrant for the time being after the property owner paid Rs 1 crore and gave an undertaking to the effect that the remaining amount would be paid within a week, according to GHMC Central Zone Commissioner Katamaneni Bhaskar.

The GHMC officials, apart from sealing the mall, had also closed the PVR multiplex and seized movable properties including computers, servers, furnitures and other materials. Bhaskar said the move was in accordance with the HMC Act. ‘‘The GHMC, during the last three years, had been issuing notices and warrants to the property owner. GHMC bill collectors and tax inspectors had also approached the owner with a request to clear pending dues. As there was no response, the GHMC was forced to seal the shopping complex,’’ Bhaskar said.

Hyderabad Central authorities clarified that the issue regarding the property tax payment was between the civic authorities and the property owners. Hyderabad Central is not responsible for what had happened. It will function as usual, they said.
