Property tax: industrial units get extension

Several small industrial units in Wadgaon Sheri have requested the property tax department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to allow them to pay the tax dues in six installments rather than paying it in one go.

The units, organised under the banner of Sri Sai Industrial Association have tax dues close to Rs 25 lakh accumulated over the last ten years. “We sent notices to these industrial units under the Sri Sai Industrial Association units. But, they had sought permission to pay the dues in installments over a period of one year. However, we gave them six months’ time,” said Vilas Kanade, chief of the property tax department.

General secretary of the association R N Gaikwad said, “This is the first time that the civic body sent notices to us for non-payment of property tax. As we are facing economic problems, we are unable to pay the dues at one go. But we would pay the tax dues in six installments.”

However, Gaikwad said, the PMC was yet to provide water supply, proper road, drainage and other basic facilities in the area. “It was one of the reasons why we did not pay the tax.”

MNS allegation baseless: Cong-NCP

THE ruling Congress-NCP on Thursday came down heavily on the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena for making false allegations against the ruling alliance. The MNS had alleged that the corporators of the ruling alliance were helping the traders evade octroi and were putting pressure on administration to give them a free hand. “We are constantly keeping track of PMC’s octroi collection. It was due to our initiative that the civic administration was forced to act against evaders,” said Congress leader Ulhas Bagul. Standing Committee chairman and NCP leader Nilesh Nikam said the allegations are baseless. The civic administration has been directed to initiate legal action against anyone involved in helping traders evade octroi, he said.

CITY unit of NCP on Thursday threatened to launch an agitation against senior Congress leader and state Forest Minister Patangrao Kadam seeking clarification on his comments on NCP chief Sharad Pawar. An apparent sting operation showed that Kadam criticised Pawar. “Kadam’s statements are objectionable and the leader should make a clarification,” said Ankush Kakade, city NCP spokesperson. He said the Congress has so far not announced any action against Kadam, but the NCP will not tolerate anything wrong said about their party chief.

Congress councillors create a ruckus over proposed hike in the Standing Committee meeting

NEW DELHI: Continuing to protest against the proposed increase in property tax, Leader of Opposition J. K. Sharma along with Congress councillors created a ruckus at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday leading to an adjournment.

Following the adjournment, disgruntled BJP councillors said that they would conduct videography of the next sitting and approach the Lieutenant-Governor over the issue of “unnecessarily obstructing the proceedings”.

Chaotic situation

Chaos erupted when Standing Committee deputy chairperson Rajni Abbi tried to raise the issue of illegal slaughtering in Delhi and Mr. Sharma insisted that he would speak on tax hike proposals brought in by Municipal Commissioner K. S. Mehra in the MCD 2010-11 budget unveiled this past week.

Sloganeering

Congress councillors, wearing placards against tax hikes, then started raising anti-BJP slogans which was followed by sloganeering and counter-sloganeering leading to the adjournment of the meeting.

Later, Standing Committee chairman Ram Kishan Singhal dubbed the protest by the Opposition as “premature and untimely” and said a final decision on implementation of tax proposals would only be taken after discussions.

‘Political mileage’

“We will keep in mind the welfare of Delhiites before taking a final call on the matter which will not be before a full-fledged debate and discussion. At present the increase in tax is just a proposal and Mr. Sharma is trying to gain cheap publicity and extract political mileage by protesting over it,” he added.

Meanwhile, the meeting postponed decisions on a new policy for installing mobile towers in Delhi and a proposal for increasing community hall booking rates. Two committees of councillors have been formed to look into the issues and submit their report in a fortnight.

Civic body brings back dog tax: Rs 5 a month

Civic body brings back dog tax: Rs 5 a month

Having decided to waive dog tax in its budget estimate for the year 2009-10, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is now reconsidering the decision.

With an assumption that dog owners are “affluent persons”, the Corporation has proposed to re-introduce dog tax at the rate of Rs 5 per month.

According to the civic body, the Delhi Municipal Act, 1957, has provisions of imposing a tax on certain vehicles and animals, including dogs. As per the provisions, MCD will charge a total sum of Rs 20: Rs 15 as a one-time registration amount, and an additional Rs 5 each month as tax from owners of pet dog.

As per the earlier approval to waive the dog tax, the municipal commissioner had directed civic officials to examine its other implications, such as regulation for keeping dogs. The civic body has also decided that withdrawing dog tax would require amendment in the DMC Act, which is a “cumbersome process.”

The civic body has submitted that the special tax was a pre-requisite for registration of dogs, and since pet dog owners fall mostly in the “affluent” category, they could easily bear the tax.
