SMC to earn additional income from registration of new buildings

SURAT: Registration of about 32,000 new buildings, including residential and commercial premises, in the first seven months of current financial year will help Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) to earn an additional income of Rs 20 crore from the area-based property tax.

Thanks to the drive initiated by municipal commissioner S Aparna to increase the property tax income by registering new properties as well as bringing the existing properties under the new area-based property tax system, the property tax department has been successful in registering 32,000 properties from April, 2009.

Now the total number of registered properties in Surat is about 13 lakh and the revenue income from the area-based property tax is expected to touch Rs 300 crore per annum.

Last year, the urban planners of SMC had set the target for property tax income at Rs 280 crore for the 12.60 lakh properties in the city. But the property tax department had collected Rs 200 crore following non-registration of new properties and most of the property owners paying taxes as per the old rates.

"It was found that tax as per old rates were being paid on more than one lakh properties, including residential and commercial in the municipal zones of Varachha, Athwa, Limbayat and Udhna. A drive was initiated to bring the existing properties under the new area-based property tax system," said a senior officer.

Sources said the Limbayat zone, dominated by migrants from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, tops in the registration process with about 7,821 new buildings registered by the SMC's property tax department. It is followed by Varachha (6,239), north zone (4,202), Rander zone (3,937), central zone (2,183), Udhna zone (4,038) and Athwa zone (3,691).

"The additional revenue income from the registration of new buildings will boost the revenue targets," said a senior SMC officer.

Water tariff revised in bid to curb waste

PANAJI: Implementing its longpropounded “volumetric tariff”, the PWD has revised water charges for consumers in Goa effective November 1.

In a bid to curb wasteful water consumption, the PWD has long advocated revision of the water tariff on volumetric basis in four slabs, with a low tariff for less consumption, increased tariff for higher consumption, excessive tariff for over consumption and a deterrent tariff for wasteful consumption.

Accordingly, the notification has fixed the new tariff for domestic consumers at Rs 3 per cubic metre (m3) for consumption up to 25m3. The earlier tariff was Rs 2.50 per m3 for consumption up to 15m3and Rs 5 for every additional m3.
