VIJAYAWADA: Officials, staff and elected representatives of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Friday celebrated the occasion of the corporation winning the second prize in the ‘National Urban Water Awards 2009.’

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil presented the award to Mayor M.V. Ratna Bindu and Commissioner P.S. Pradyumna at a function held in New Delhi on Thursday.

The Mayor, along with the Commissioner, celebrated the occasion at the VMC main office by cutting a cake.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Pradyumna said that the award was in recognition of the corporation’s successful supply of drinking water to the public.

He said that efforts were on to provide safe drinking water to all people. Mr. Pradyumna thanked the employees and elected representatives for rendering cooperation in bagging the prize.

Ms. Ratna Bindu said that the State government’s scheme of providing drinking water connection for Rs. 200 had come in handy to the VMC in enhancing water supply. “We have conducted special melas in the city to popularise the scheme,” she recollected.

Floor leaders Kalapala Ambedkar (Congress), Y.V. Ramana Rao (Telugu Desam Party), D. Sankar (Communist Party of India) and Ch. Babu Rao (CPI-M) were present.
