Mayor reviews civic body work

A meeting of Sub Divisional Engineers was called by Mayor Raj Bala Malik on Thursday to assess the progress of work in the city. The officials rued that due to non-availability of construction material work was lying incomplete. The problem of shortage of material has been going on for some time. Meanwhile, the Mayor expressed the need for time bound completion of work.

Malik directed the officials to submit a development report of their areas so that their problems could be verified. She has also asked for a report to be submitted about the development works including a shopping complex at Mauli Jagran as well as new community centres for Sectors 22, 44, 47, 48 and 49.

The Mayor was informed that five greenbelts had been developed in Sector 44 and work was in progress in other sectors. Tenders have been floated regarding electricity material for maintenance of streetlights and lights to be provided in parks. The work for carpeting of roads would be undertaken in September after the monsoons.

Councillors across party lines have been complaining about work not being undertaken in their wards despite agenda items being approved. A few projects have been pending for years with no progress being made. The officials on their part have been complaining about the shortage of material due to a ban on mining.

Work like carpeting of roads has not taken place since the beginning of the year. Even last year the progress was slow. It had earlier been proposed that the rates of purchasing material be increased so that contractors are willing to work.
