Independents rule roost in civic bodies
The independent candidates despite remaining in large number in the fray in the elections to over 4,976 Urban Local Bodies have managed to secure only 776 seats and swept in as many as 12 civic bodies, including that of Belgaum City Corporation.
According to State Election Commission sources, the independents have won 12 civic bodies, including Belgaum City Corporation and five town panchayats and three TMCs. However, the independents are expected to play a crucial role in over 74 ULBs in the state where no political parties have won majority. However the independents have swept the election in as many as 12 ULBs including Belgaum City Corporation, and other civic bodies including at Kudligi, Bhatkal, Nippani, Gokak 31-31, Chikkodi, Khanapura, Sadalaga, Raibag and Konnur.
