Bio-metric finger scan readers from April 16 in MMC

MARGAO: Outgoing Margao municipal council chief officer (CO) SandhyaKamat on Monday issued a circular stating that the bio-metric finger scan readers for recording of attendance would be implemented from April 16 onwards.

This comes against the backdrop of the ongoing impasse between the Margao municpal council (MMC) and its employees over the implementation of the bio-metric finger scan readers.

On her last day in office, Kamat issued the circular, having kept the decision on hold ever since the employees had threatened to strike work if the civic body tried to bulldoze its way with the implementation.

The then acting CO Deepali Naik, who will now replace Kamat as the new CO from Tuesday, had held a meeting with the employees under the banner of Goa municipal employees association at the time when Kamat was on leave in the month of February. After that meeting, in a written reply the association opposed the biometric finger scan readers on grounds that its implementation is not backed by law.

The high court of Bombay at Goa has disposed of a writ petition filed by the Green Goa Foundation on February 5, and directed the MMC chief officer to call for a meeting with the union of employees to have talks with them and obtain their willingness to use the said system, so that the entire problem could be solved.
