Civic polls: Kamrup district administration all set for D-Day

GUWAHATI: The Kamrup (Metro) district authorities have completed preparations for smooth conduct of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) election scheduled to be held on Wednesday. Polling material will be distributed among the poll officials appointed for the election at the Sarusajai stadium here on Tuesday. The district administration said that around 4,500 poll officials will reach the polling stations by Tuesday evening under police protection.

Additional deputy commissioner of Kamrup (Metro) Dhruba Jyoti Das said that mobile police parties will be deployed across the city from Monday onwards to keep a strict vigil on violation of the model code of conduct. "Campaigning is not allowed after 4pm on Monday and if the authorities find anyone campaigning after the permitted time, a case will be registered against the violators," Das said. He added that candidates will be allowed to erect booths on election day only beyond a 100-metre radius from the polling station.

The GMC election is going to be held after 10 years; 7,06,689 voters will elect 31 ward councillors and 90 area sabha representatives to form the elected body of the GMC. Voting will take place at 862 polling stations across the city from 7am to 4pm on Wednesday.

The GMC election will take place on ballot paper. An elector will have to cast his or her vote for a ward councilor on white ballot paper, while for area sabha representatives, votes will be cast on yellow ballot paper. Apart from the existing police force in the city, additional 1,000 police personnel and home guards will be deployed during the election.

All liquor shops and bars have been asked to remain shut on Tuesday and Wednesday across the district in view of the polls.
