Yuvaraj is new head of Udupi City Municipal Corporation

UDUPI: Congress councillors, Yuvaraj P and Amrita Krishnamurthy, were unanimously elected the president and vice-president respectively of Udupi City Municipal Corporation (CMC) on Thursday.

The president's post was reserved for a SC candidate, while the post of the vice-president was reserved for a woman in general category.

The reservation list was announced on on August 24, while the polls for the urban local bodies were held on March 7.

The Congress has the majority with 22 seats in the 35-member council. BJP had secured 12 seats and one was bagged by an independent candidate. There were 32 voters present at CWC during the election including the MLA and 31 councillors.

Both Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Jayaprakash Hegde and Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes were absent.

The votes of BJP councillors Naveen Bhandari and Geetha Ravi Shet were nullified as they arrived late. BJP councillors Mahesh Thakur and Vijay Kunder remained absent.
