3-day Mayor Cup begins on Friday

NAVI MUMBAI: The Navi Mumbai Mayor cup kicked off on Friday, with over 800 players participating in the inter-school badminton and table tennis tournament. Over 350 paddlers and 520 shuttlers, from various age groups, entered to win cash prizes at the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation ( NMMC) organized three-day-long sports festival.

"Over 50 schools from Digha to Belapur fielded their students in for both badminton and table tennis competitions. The tournament is turning out to be a resounding success," said mayor Sagar Naik who is the brain behind this inter-school competition. This is the second Mayor Cup and the number of participants from last year have increased.

The students played three rounds on Friday. The quarterfinals will be played on Saturday. The players advancing to the next round from both badminton and table tennis disciplines, include Tanishka Shetty, Gargi Degvekar, Adya Tiwari, Shrutika Sharma, Ashutosh Adhikari, Anagha Shetty, Arushi Sharma, Shivpriya Arora, Vaibhav Tiwari, Aditi Singh and Raghav Khanna. The matches are being played in the under-12, under-15 and under-18 age group for table tennis. The badminton tournament is split into under-11, under-15 and under-17 for both boys and girls.

Vashi: The much-awaited Navi Mumbai Mayor cup has got off to a good start on Friday with over 800 players in the fray for inter-school badminton and table tennis tourney. Over 350 young paddlers and 520 shuttlers have entered the competition arena to fight it out at the ongoing Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) organized three-day-long sports festival being held under the banner of Navi Mumbai Mayor Cup, targetting students from city schools at Navi Mumbai Sports Association (NMSA) indoor stadium.

The players advancing to the quarterfinals included Tanishka Shetty, Gargi Degvekar, Adya Tiwari, Shrutika Sharma, Ashutosh Adhikari, Anagha Shetty, Arushi Sharma, Shivpriya Arora, Vaibhav Tiwari, Aditi Singh and Raghav Khanna. "Over 50 schools from Digha to CBD fielded their students in various age groups for both badminton and table tennis competitions. The tourney has evoked resounding response," said mayor Sagar Naik who is the brain behind this inter-school competition to reignite competitive spirit among the young kids.

Winners from various groups will be given cash prizes. The matches are being played in the age group of under-12, under-15, under-18 for table tennis whereas badminton event is split into under-11, under-15 and under-17 for both boys and girls.
