Puppet show to highlight solid waste management

PUNE: The Warje Karvenagar ward office had organised a puppet show to create awareness about garbage segregation and nuisance of plastic bags.

A statement issued by the ward office said that the shows was organised for the students and citizen from Kothrud Gaothan and Dahanukar colony areas. A short film on the good practices of solid waste management was screened during the programme.

Earlier ward office had conducted an essay competition for students to promote the importance of solid waste management. The competition was organised on the occasion of independence day.

The ward office had organised 'Anti plastic week'. Action was taken against the people, who were using the bags having the thickness of less than 50 micron for their business purposes. As many as 219 commercial establishment were fined during the drive. The officials have collected plastic bags weighing around 300 kg.

All these drive have been carried out as the part of the Yashwantrao Chavan Pune City Cleanliness Drive conducted by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The drive was launched on on the lines of the Sant Gadgebaba Gram Swachata Abhiyan. The drive took into account parameters such as the status of garbage bins, road cleanliness, garbage segregation, garbage processing facilities and public participation.

Many citizens groups and elected members have demanded ban on the plastic carry bags. The administration and elected members had imposed the ban on plastic carry bags in 2010. The general body of PMC had last year directed the civic administration to strictly implement the same. As per the PMC officials, out of the 1,400 tonne garbage generated in the city everyday, around 15% was plastic waste.
