BBMP ward reservation list announced

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: After much dilly-dallying, the State Government on Monday announced the reservation list for the 198 wards of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The gazette notification has also been published.

The announcement of the reservation list paves the way for the conduct of elections to the BBMP, which recently completed three years without an elected council.

The Karnataka High Court had recently directed the State Government to announce the reservation list by November 30, and the State Election Commission to notify the calendar of events by December 7.

The State Government released the list on Monday. Now all eyes will be on the State Election Commission for announcement of calendar of events for the polls.

Though the Government had issued guidelines for fixing reservation of BBMP wards on July 31, 2009, the same had been challenged in the High Court for being “unscientific”. As many as 107 wards come under the General category, 53 under Backward Cla sses (A), 13 under BC (B), 23 under Scheduled Castes, and two under Scheduled Tribes. Out the 198 wards, 67 have been reserved for women.
