HYDERABAD: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor B. Karthika Reddy undertook her first inspection of a few ongoing civic works on Monday, perceptibly in the old city.

Her first official visit was to the new bridge across the Musi river under construction for the last few months. The bridge connects the north and south banks of the river connecting Golnaka at Zinda Tilasmath road to the proposed 80- foot road at the Old Malakpet near the Race Course. The 219-metre-long and 12-metre-wide bridge will have 2.25 metres of footpath on either side. It has about 16 spans and as of now, 15 piers have been completed while the superstructure work is in progress, explained the contractor J.S.R. Constructions which bagged the project for Rs. 5.33 crore.

Distance reduced

Engineering-in-Chief P. Panduranga Rao explained that the bridge will reduce distance between Golnaka and Amberpet towards Malakpet side.

It is also meant to reduce the traffic load on the Chaderghat Bridge, Moosarambagh road and related stretches on Warangal highway as well as National highway nine. The contractor told Ms. Reddy that all the piers including pier caps and an abutment were completed while another abutment was in progress so was pre-casting of girders.

The project completion date is August 26, 2010 and the work is on course to be finished within the agreement period of 18 months.

Deputy Speaker Jaffar Husain also accompanied the Mayor.

For a while, Majlis MLA (Malakpet) Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala too joined. Later, they visited sewer improvement works being taken up in the old city under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Work is being done in three packages by Ramky Infrastructures, Indian Hume Pipe and Vishwa Infrastructures & Services, for a total cost of about Rs. 240 crore for little more than 211 km in the region.

Women of the respective localities appealed for laying wider pipelines for drinking water. Interestingly, neither the Commissioner nor any of the Additional Commissioners participated.
