Municipal commissioner to represent Surat in climate change meet in New York

SURAT: Municipal Commissioner Manoj Das will represent Surat city in a one day meet to be held in New York on December 4. The meet is organized by Rockefeller foundation in which 100 selected city representatives would participate to discuss different issues related to climate change.

"In the meet the selected cities would be felicitated for their work done to develop resilient strategies against climate change," said Jatin Shah, city engineer, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC)

Surat is one of the selected cities and ranks among the top due to it's development of end to end early warning system for floods, for setting up Urban Health Climate Resilience Center(UHCRC) and setting up of all weather stations.

Surat received Rs 2 crore as funding from Rockefeller Foundation for setting up of climate change trust.

The cities funding for activities of development of climate change resilience is likely to increase after the meet along with few other cities of the world.

Surat is one of the ten sister cities of Asian Cities Climate change Resilience Network(ACCCRN) and has been in fore front of issues related to climate change in the country.

SMC begins celebrations of Heritage week

SURAT: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has organized an exhibition depicting heritage structures of the city with their history at art gallery in Science Center of the city.

This week long exhibition that started on November, 22 will go on till month end and will show people the ancient heritage and history of the city that is called Surat today.

CY Bhatt, Deputy Commissioner SMC said, " As a part of World Heritage week celebration, we would like our citizens to develop a sense of historical perspective and heritage value that they live amidst. Our aim is to make people aware of rich heritage of Old fort, Gopi talav, Chowk bazaar square among other structures."

SMC has already under taken tow mega heritage conservation projects under which Chowk bazaar square is being developed as heritage square in the center of the city . The area houses seven heritage monuments including old fort . In the second project, called the redevelopment of Gopi talav , a 15 th century heritage structure a fusion of old with new is envisaged. The lake once fully redeveloped will not only provide a picnic spot for old city residents but also give a glimpse of 15 th century Surat.
