MNC food chains may set up shop at BMC headquarters

The BMC might soon have international food chain outlets at its headquarters at Fort, south Mumbai. In a bid to revamp its canteen, the civic body has suggested setting up a food court and the administration will soon invite tenders from various food chains such as KFC, McDonalds, Cafe Coffee Day and Starbucks.

While the canteen provides food and tea at a subsidised rate, employees as well as visitors to the civic headquarters will have to pay more if the food court is set up.

"A food court will offer more variety. Both foreign outlets and some popular city-based outlets will be invited to set up stalls," said Rahul Shewale, BMC standing committee chairman and Shiv Sena corporator.

The proposal, which has been mooted by Shewale, is in final stages of approval from the civic administration. The BMC canteen offers vada pav, idli, sabudana vada, upma, sev puri, sandwiches and gulab jamun, among other dishes. Nearly a month ago, a proposal to get food from the high-end Thacker's restaurant in south Mumbai for standing committee members during meetings was rejected by the administration. Corporators from the standing committee meeting had said the food provided during the meetings was 'unhygienic' and of low quality.

Shewale has now started paying for the food brought from Thacker's restaurant during panel meets from his own pocket.

In September, the BMC had passed a proposal backed by Shiv Sena youth wing president Aditya Thackeray to keep eateries and shops open 24X7 in the city. The proposal is now pending with the state government.

Jindal ITF gets solid waste management award

Special Correspondent

Jindal Infrastructure, Transportation and Fabrication (ITF), part of the $18 billion O.P. Jindal Group has bagged the award for excellence in Solid Waste Management 2013 in the best companies category.

The award was launched in 2010 along with the international symposium on solid waste management. In the first edition, two categories were introduced -- ‘company’ and municipal body’ -- to recognise outstanding achievements. A new category ‘NGO’ was added in the second edition.

Jindal ITF Managing Director Indresh Batra said solutions are needed to manage the growing problem of municipal solid waste faced by burgeoning metropolises and towns. Innovative, scientific and sustainable solutions such as waste to power as implemented in the Timarpur Okhla plant in Delhi is an example.

The Timarpur Okhla Waste Management project is CDM registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change for earning carbon credits.

Staff Reporter

A commemorative meeting passed a resolution urging Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to install a bronze statue of former mayor T. Venkateswara Rao, popularly known as TV, in the city.

A meeting of former corporators, mayors, deputy mayors, and standing committees’ chairmen was held here on Monday. The participants paid rich tributes to TV, the first mayor of the city.

The meeting also resolved that a bronze statue of TV should be installed at a prominent place and also that an appropriate locality should be named after TV, as T. Venkateswara Rao Nagar. They wanted the T. Venkateswara Chowk at Chuttugunta be developed.

CPI leader and former MLA K. Subba Raju wrote a letter to Municipal Commissioner Ch. Hari Kiran urging him to take necessary steps in this regard.

Stating that the Corporation used to organise children’s day and cultural competitions, Mr. Subba Raju requested the Commissioner to revive them. The VMC should take necessary steps to send invitations to former corporators, former mayors etc to the functions organised by the Corporation, he added.
