Govt to send showcause notice to Belgaum corp

BANGALORE: The state government has decided to serve a showcause notice to Belgaum City Corporation for its alleged administrative lapses and also for not convening a general body meeting since July 2009.

Urban Development Minister Suresh Kumar told reporters that the nature of action to be taken against the corporation would be decided based on the reply to the notice. The Minister, who visited the Belgaum corporation recently, expressed displeasure over the affairs of the civic body and held the lack of coordination between officials and elected representatives as the reason for the problems. As a result, work under the Rs 100-crore special package announced by the Chief Minister had not started yet and the funds released under 12th Finance Commission were also lying unutilised, he said.

To add to the woes, the elected representatives have not met since July 2009. ``They didn’t even offer a proper explanation for not convening the general body meeting,’’ Kumar said. According to the Karnataka Municipal Act, the government can supersede any urban local body which fails to convene a general body meeting for over six months.

Kumar said a team of officials from the urban development department will visit the corporation soon and review the progress. The team will also review the illegal construction activities in the city, he added.

Accommodation crisis haunts GHMC officials

December 3rd, 2009
By Our Correspondent

Hyderabad, Dec. 2: Finding space to accommodate the newly elected body of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is proving to be a tough proposition.

The GHMC’s main office building at Tank Bund does not have the space to accommodate the mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee chairperson and floor leaders of political parties.

The chamber of the GHMC commissioner and special officer, Mr S.P. Singh, is being remodelled to accommodate the mayor. The election of the mayor and his deputy will be held on December 4. At least two GHMC additional commissioners and several other officials have to be shifted from their present location on the first floor to accommodate the deputy mayor and the standing committee chairperson and floor leaders. The additional commissioner (heritage) and district medical officer of GHMC are working from Buddha Bhavan in Secunderabad, two km from the corporation head office.

The swearing-in ceremony itself is going to be a congested affair. With difficulty, officials have made arrangements to accommodate about 250 people in the Jubilee Hall on December 4 for the swearing-in and election of the mayor. The corporators and ex-officio members number 215. Then there will be officials, media personnel and guests.

The Hyderabad collector, Mr Navin Mittal told this newspaper that due to paucity of space, entry into Jubilee Hall will be restricted.
