MCD ups wedding booking rates sixfold

NEW DELHI: Getting married in the Capital will now burn a huge hole in your pocket. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Thursday passed a resolution in the standing committee to increase booking rates in several city parks from Rs 5,000 to Rs 30,000.

The booking rate of the Punjabi Bagh stadium, one of the most sought after sites in West Delhi for organizing social functions and weddings, has been raised to the said amount.

The fine amount, cleaning charges and security deposits have also been raised sharply. Now, one will have to pay Rs 25,000 as security deposit as against Rs 10,000 collected earlier and Rs 1,000 for the cleaning of parks instead of Rs 200 charged earlier. Holding of more than one function at the same site without required clearance would cost Rs 50,000 each.

"The decision to increase booking rates of the parks has been taken in view of the high number of requisitions we have been getting. The move will benefit the MCD financially and will also help in maintenance of the parks,'' said a senior MCD official. He said that as per a recent High Court order the MCD is supposed to forbid use of the parks for holding functions in a phased manner.

There is lot of pressure for booking the stadium at Punjabi Bagh, a senior MCD official said, and compared to the demand, the rates charged are quite low. The civic body thus barely manages to make any money from renting out the premises. The official said most people who book the stadium for weddings have a huge budget and can afford the increasing rates. "In any case, even the increased charges for MCD parks are much lower than what DDA charges. The rent for booking in DDA parks is as high as Rs 1.5 lakh,'' said an MCD official.

The MCD has a total of 675 parks under its jurisdiction. Of this, sources said, 540 parks that have seen fewer bookings will be closed for holding functions after December. Booking of other parks will also be banned later. There are many municipal wards where there is no proper community hall till date. "We are trying to locate land for community centers in these wards with the help of local councillors after which the booking in the local parks will be banned,'' said Leader of the House in MCD Subhash Arya.

A health check on capital-ists

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It’s not easy to handle the mantle of being the capital city. From its air, water and roads, everything counts.

A survey to check on the health status of the capital city’s population is being done by two major research centres of the Kerala University. The survey is titled ‘Urban Health: searching for patterns, differentials and correlations of Thiruvananthapuram corporation using GIS technology’.

It’s the Population Study Centre and the Centre for Geoinformation Science and Technology who are conducting the ambitious survey. Not only is the survey an effort to model the patterns of urban health, it also aims to find out the relation of personal health with natural parameters like availability of water, cleanliness and pollution.

It does not end there. The habits of citizens in the area of health, like their treatment-seeking pattern, access to treatment points and even the quality of drinking water would be surveyed.

As part of the survey, the surveyors will measure the sugar level as well as BP. This will be done free of cost. The details of these analyses will be handed over to the citizens.

“The survey would also examine various factors like mosquito breeding centres in the vicinity and the quality of the water in the local well,’’ said S. Santhosh, additional director in charge of the Population Study Centre.

“The PH value of the water in the wells will be studied. Apart from that, the water in the well will be sent to the lab for testing. These results will also be made available to the persons concerned,’’ he said.

The survey would also try to identify the reproductive and healthcare problems of the female population in the city. A health screening report of the households will be prepared on the basis of the survey, he said.

The pilot survey has been kicked off in selected wards in the coastal, rural, semi-urban and urban areas of the Corporation. In the next stage, the survey would be extended to all wards of the Corporation.

The Population Research Centre had earlier conducted a landmark survey, the ‘National Family Health Survey’, in 1992-93.

At present, seven surveys conducted by the centre are in progress and the major one is the ‘Baseline Survey on Reproductive and Child Health’ in Kozhikode and Palakkad districts.

Locating your polling booth is easier now

HYDERABAD: Delimitation of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) into 150 divisions (wards) has lead to relocation of polling booths at several places.

Because of this, many voters are not aware as to which polling booth they have to visit for casting their vote on November 23. A solution to this problem is now at hand. Voters can know information on their polling booth in a jiffy on their mobile phone by just sending an SMS.

To make things easy for the voters, the GHMC has come out with a web search. To know the details of polling booths, the voter has to log on to www.Pollingbooth.in or www.ghmc.gov.in.

There are two easy options to identify the relevant polling station.

One is by using the Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number and the other is by the house number. The voter should type the GHMC voter ID number and then SMS to 56677. In a few seconds, the voter will receive the message containing the address and details of the polling stations.

If the voter does not possess a voter identity card, the alternative is using the house number. The voter should type GHMC HNO and SMS to 56677.

In a few seconds, he or she will receive the address of the poling station.

The web-based search has been developed by Hyderabad-based Gray Logics Technologies.

The method was proved a success during the general election held in April this year.
