BBMP reservation list ready
Bangalore: Nov 18, DH News Service

The Urban Development Department is ready with the list of the reservation of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) wards, the last hurdle to be cleared for holding the Palike elections.

Sources in the Urban Development Department told Deccan Herald that it is waiting for the government’s nod for releasing the list of the reservation of wards.

The new list is totally different from the previous one.

Nod sought

“We are ready with the list. Only thing that is restricting us from releasing it is the government’s nod. Once we get it we can release it at anytime,” said the sources.

A couple of months back, the Urban Development Department had released the list of wards to the media but later withdrew it. There were serious differences of opinion in the ruling BJP over the reservation of wards. Before it could lead to squabblings, the government withdrew it.

Under pressure

The government is under pressure from the High Court which has directed it to release the list of reservation of wards by November 30.

Under the given circumstances, the government is left with 12 days to release the list of wards.

Making a point: Deputy Commissioner P. Manivannan (second from right) at the JNNURM review meeting in Mysore on Wednesday. He is flanked by Mayor Purushottam (right) and Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K.S. Raikar.

MYSORE: Mayor Purushottam has expressed dismay over the quality of work on a few projects being implemented under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) here.

Participating in the JNNURM review meeting on Wednesday, the Mayor alleged that quality was being compromised and referred to the use of low grade concrete in the construction of storm water drain at Brindavan Extension. The Mayor said that he had taken samples of material from the site and showed them to the officials reviewing the work in progress.

Responding to the allegations, the engineers overseeing the work on the projects contended that they were using a substitute in view of shortage of sand as its supply had been affected following a ban on sand mining till Panchalinga Darshana at Talakad in T. Narsipura ended.

But Deputy Commissioner P. Manivannan said that the samples be sent for a laboratory test and wait for the result before pronouncing anything on the issue. Mr. Manivannan also directed the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board to expedite the implementation of the Kabini Second Stage Drinking Water Scheme. He said that though the land acquisition process had been completed, there was a delay in starting work though the contract had been awarded.

The KUWSDB representatives’ explanation that a protest by farmers against inadequate compensation was not taken into cognisance by the Deputy Commissioner who said work may be taken up with police protection.

PMC prepares for mayor elections

The political activities of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have gained momentum after it was clear that the post would be available to candidates from the open general category for the next 26 months. The neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will also be able to elect a mayor from the general category.

This follows the announcement of reservations of mayoral posts in several other municipal corporations of the state.

As per the government notification, the mayoral post has a term of 30 months. However, the Assembly elections had delayed the appointment of a new mayor after the previous term expired in July.

The NCP is the single largest party in the PMC.
