Shimoga CMC top posts elections on September 1

Elections for the post of president and vice-president of Shimoga City Municipal Council (CMC) will be held on September 12. No political party enjoys majority in the CMC. In the 35-member body, the Congress has won 12 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party eight, the Karnataka Janata Paksha seven, and the Janata Dal (Secular) has won five seats. Three independent candidates have also been elected as councillors. Apart from this, Shimoga Rural MLA Sharada Poorya Naik, who belongs to the JD(S), MP B.Y. Raghavendra, who was elected on BJP ticket, member of Rajya Sabha and BJP district unit president Ayanur Manjunath, four MLCs including the Chairperson of State Legislative Council D.H. Shankaramurthy, M.B. Bhanuprakash, R.K. Siddaramanna, and P.V. Krishna Bhat, who belong to the BJP, can also vote in the elections.

The post of president is reserved for BCM (A) woman and that of vice-president for women belonging to the general category. Congress that has emerged as the single largest party has planned to come to power by seeking the support of the KJP and the JD(S). There was a preliminary discussion between the leaders of these three parties on forging an alliance in the CMC. According to the seat-sharing formula, the Congress will get the post of president, the KJP vice-president, and the JD(S) will get the post of president of the Standing Committee. The BJPis also trying to forge an alliance with the KJP and the JD(S).

Even though the ruling BJP in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council is yet to announce its mayoral candidate, four-time councillor B.S. Sathyanarayana from Basavanagudi is in all likelihood set to don the role.

The election to the post of mayor and deputy mayor will be held on Wednesday. The Mayor’s post has been reserved for the general category, while the Deputy Mayor’s post, as per the High Court’s direction, has been reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (woman) category.

Tumkur, Shimoga and Bijapur to be upgraded as corporations

The State government has decided to upgrade city municipal councils of Tumkur, Shimoga and Bijapur as corporations, Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake has said.

“Though the Bharatiya Janata Party government upgraded the Tumkur CMC as a corporation, the Karnataka High Court quashed the order in April 2011 on the grounds that the population is less than three lakh as per Census 2001. The government decided to upgrade these CMCs based on the Census 2011 figures.

“The population of Tumkur city has now crossed three lakhs. The court also directed the government to consider the Census figures,” he told presspersons on Monday.

As per Section 3 of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act 1976, the population of the area to be declared as a corporation should not be less than three lakh.

Mr. Sorake said during the transition phase of Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission, 61 projects worth Rs. 5,265.22 crore were approved by the State-level sanctioning committee and forwarded to the Ministry of Urban Development.

Seventeen water supply projects with an estimated cost of Rs 711.92 crore were approved and submitted to the Union government under Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns, the Minister said.
