Corporators can vote in MLC bypolls on Aug 22
Even as many hurdles elude the council of
Mysore City Corporation (MCC) from its first sitting, the corporators
have got a chance to take part in the forthcoming by-election to the
Legislative Council from Mysore- Chamarajanagar districts local bodies
segment on August 22.
The Election Commission of India has given its consent allowing the corporators to exercise their franchise.
Deputy
Commissioner C Shikha who is also the returning officer for the
election on Wednesday said that the ECI has orally communicated that
corporators could exercise their franchise.
All the 65 corporators who were elected in the polls
held in the month of March, are yet to take part in the first sitting of
the council, as the subsequent Assembly polls had refrained the
announcement of reservations for elections to the posts of Mayor and
Deputy Mayor.
With the Mayoral polls the tenure of the council begins. Even after the formation of the government, law-makers had busied themselves in budget preparations.
Declaration
Now, the declaration of by-elections to Mandya and Bangalore rural parliamentary seats on August 21 and to the Legislative Council on August 22 has stymied the process of announcing reservation for the Mayoral elections.
In all, there are 7,010 voters for the council by polls comprising 4,047 men and 2,963 women in both districts. Among them, 4,743 voters are in Mysore district and the remaining 2,267 voters are in Chamarajanagar.
Unlike the general elections, members of various local bodies from gram panchayat, taluk panchayat, ZP, city municipal council, town municipality and Mysore City Corporation (MCC) to the Legislative Assembly, Council and Parliament are eligible to vote here.

Mysore district has the highest of 879 voters, followed by 860 in Nanjangud, T Narsipura - 692, H D Kote - 617, Hunsur - 581, K R Nagar - 576 and Periyapatna - 538. In Chamarajanagar, Chamarajanagar has 786 voters, Kollegal - 764, Gundlupet - 518, and Yalandur - 199.
