BWSSB chief stresses on need for RWH

Reiterating the need to save water, BWSSB chairman Gaurav Gupta said the city must look at how other cities are conserving water and try to emulate them.

Addressing a gathering of over 300 students at a workshop-cum-exhibition titled ‘Save Water’ organised by the Institute of Engineers, Gupta said, “Rain is our only source of clean water and it is important that we fully implement rain water harvesting in our homes,” he said. “Engineering feats have allowed us to bring piped water all the way from the Cauvery. People tend to waste water because they can’t see the pipes and do not realise the magnitude of bringing water from the Cauvery river. But what is going to happen when the river goes dry? Everywhere in the world, people are battling water shortage and we have to learn how they cope with it and implement it here too,” he said.

Students need to be made aware of the situation urgently, he said, adding that the BWSSB was willing to work with institutes such as the Institute of Engineers in creating awareness about the available water resources and teach students the need to conserve water.

At the exhibition, the students took a pledge to conserve water.

The exhibition ‘Save Water’  is on till July 15 and will display posters and models of water conservation methods, rain water harvesting and other available water resources.

NDMC Commissioner P.K. Gupta said the required conditions for the go ahead of the MCI have been met. All the infrastructure-related works like laboratories, library, classrooms and even the recruitment of the faculty have already been completed. “The entire process has taken about an year and we have spent Rs.7 crore on it,’’ the officer said.

The Corporation officials said the admissions to the new college are expected to start from the coming session once the college gets a formal letter from the MCI. With the beginning of the medical college, the first big project of the NDMC would be realised. The project started last year.
