Bangalore wastes 80 p.c. of Cauvery water, says former Mayor

Staff Reporter

Former Bangalore Mayor P.R. Ramesh has said that 80 per cent of the water supplied to the city from the Cauvery is being wasted and only 20 per cent is actually being consumed.

Attributing the wastage to excess usage in construction sites, pilferage from water lines, leakages and simply bad plumbing, Mr. Ramesh sought to present an alternative that could be sustainable in the long run.

He told presspersons here on Monday that out of the 500 million litre per day(mld) of water that the city receives, only 10 mld is consumed. Unused water should be diverted lakes in the city, he said.

Rivers

“The rivers Hemavathi and Netravati can [also] be used to store up water,” Mr. Ramesh said.

AIUDF to contest urban polls for first time

GUWAHATI: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has jumped into the Guwahati municipal election fray, deciding to field candidates in 15 municipal wards.

So far, AIUDF had contested in the assembly, Lok Sabha and panchayat elections. The party recently decided to field a candidate in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha election for the first time since its formation in 2006 as well.

AIUDF leaders said that contesting in the municipal election is crucial to build up the party as one of the political alternatives for city residents. It will finalize the list of candidates soon.

While Congress, AGP and BJP have already decided to contest the municipal polls, the participation of AIUDF will add new political dimension to the election, political observers said. Election to the 31 municipal wards will be held on June 19.

"We have geared up for the municipal election. Our ward-level committees have already stepped up organizational activities, AIUDF general secretary, Siddique Ali Thakuria said.

Thakuria said that as a political party it is AIUDF's responsibility to highlight the civic issues to the public and work for betterment of the city. He said that tackling artificial floods, providing drinking water facilities, proper management of garbage disposal and street lighting are some of the issues the party will focus on.

"As a responsible political party, we are duty-bound to work for the betterment of the city. Today, Guwahati is plagued by many problems because of the inefficiency of the ruling government," Thakuria said. He added that the Congress-led government has failed to address the problems faced by Guwahati residents.

"A few minutes of downpour leaves the city under water. The artificial floods problem should have been taken care of by the Congress government long ago. But it wasn't. AIUDF should give a proper reply to the failures of the government," Thakuria added.

Panchkula MC polls: 52 candidates withdraw

Fifty two people withdrew their nominations on Thursday for the Panchkula Municipal Corporation (PMC) general elections, scheduled to be held next month. Of the 215 people who had filed their nominations, a majority of them withdrew as covering candidates while a few independent candidates also joined that list leaving the total number of candidates in the poll fray at 163.

Returning officer, R K Singh, said that none of the candidates contesting on a party ticket withdrew their nominations and it was mostly the independent candidates and covering candidates who conveyed their decision to not contest the elections. The process to withdrawal of candidates continued throughout the Thursday with the Mini Secretariat teeming with people. With withdrawals taking place, contesting candidates said that they will continue with the door-to-door visits to woo voters.

A former councillor, Lily Bawa, said that she has already launched a door-to-door campaign in her seat — ward no 14.

"I have already started the door-to-door campaign and now with withdrawals complete the campaigning pressure will be mor"," she said. From ward no 1, one candidate withdrew the nomination, officials said.
