HDMC council has a lot of new faces

The newly elected council of the Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation has a lot of young faces this time, with most of them entering the council for the first time.

Along with senior councillors such as Pandurang Patil, Deepak Chinchore and D.K. Chavan, there are 28 candidates who have made it to the municipal council for the first time.

Of the 24 councillors from Dharwad, 13 have been elected to the municipal council for the first time, while in Hubli, of the 43 councillors 16 are new faces. What is more significant is that several of them defeated former councillors.

While the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Anasuya Cholappanavar defeated the former councillor Rasulbi R. Doddamani of the Congress, Bibi Fathima Pathan of the Congress defeated Sheela V. Anchatageri, wife of the former councillor Iresh Anchatageri of the BJP. The BJP’s Nirmala Shivanand Javali defeated the former councillor Saroja B. Patil of the Janata Dal (Secular).

Similarly, the former councillors Prakash Ghatge (Congress) and Prakash Godbole (BJP) were defeated by first-timers Shankar T. Shelake (BJP) and Raju Shankar Rao Ambore (JD-S) respectively.

However, it was Congress candidates Shaila Venkaraddi Kamaraddi and Baseer Ahmed Gudmal who disappointed the BJP by defeating two-time Deputy Mayor Bharati Patil and the former Mayor Radhabai N. Sapare respectively. Another defeat for the BJP was that of Shanthappa Devakki, who was defeated by first-timer and BJP rebel Mallikarjun Ajjappa Horakeri. The former Deputy Mayor Chandrashekhar Managundi (BJP) was also defeated by first-timer Kariyappa K. Beesagal (Congress).

While Beerappa N. Khandekar (BJP) defeated the former BJP councillor (now with the KJP) Hoovappa Dayagodi, Abdul Wahab Mulla (Congress) defeated the former Mayor Venkatesh Mestri, who has now joined the KJP.

The BJP has the highest number of newcomers. Of the 33 newly elected councillors, 50 per cent are first-timers. Of the 22 Congress members, 9 are newcomers. The JD(S) too has three new faces. The two independent candidates Mallikarjun Horakeri and Muktum Hussain Yaragatti are also newcomers.

KJP on top in two ULBs in Haveri

Staff Correspondent

The former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP), which was launched in Haveri district, has obtained a majority in two local bodies in the district.

Apart from coming to power to in Hanagal and Byadagi town municipal councils, the KJP, with 51 seats, pushed the BJP to third position in overall performance in the district.

The KJP also bagged eight seats in the Haveri City Municipal Council, where the Congress, by securing only 13 seats in the 31-member House, will not be able to stake claim for power without the support of the former. The BJP has secured nine seats and the BSR Congress one. Even in the Hirekerur Town Panchayat, the KJP has the highest number of seven seats in the 16-member House.

The Congress, which won the highest number of seats (78) in 193 wards of eight urban local bodies, has retained power in the Savanur and Bankapur town municipal councils and it is the single largest party in the Haveri and Ranebennur city municipal councils with 13 seats each.

The BJP, which topped the list in the 2007 elections, has been pushed to third position with 41 seats. The only solace for it is that it is the single largest party in the Shiggaon Town Municipal Council, where it is a fractured verdict as in the 2007 elections. Shiggaon constituency is represented by Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who, despite his close association with Mr. Yeddyurappa earlier, stayed with the BJP and was in charge of the party’s poll campaign in Haveri district.

The Janata Dal (Secular) managed to win five seats in the district, while the BSR Congress won three. In addition, 15 Independents emerged victorious in the district.

The details of results are as follows (the number in brackets indicates the total number of seats):

Haveri CMC (31): BJP - nine, Congress - 13, KJP - eight, and BSR Congress – one

Ranebennur CMC (31): BJP - three, Congress - 13, KJP - nine, and Independents – six

Byadagi TMC (23): BJP - two, Congress - five, KJP - 12, and Independents – four

Hanagal TMC (23): Congress - eight and KJP – 15

Savanur TMC (23): BJP - nine, Congress - 12, and Janata Dal (Secular) – two

Bankapur TMC (23): BJP - eight, Congress - 14, and Independents – one

Shiggaon TMC (23): BJP - 10, Congress - nine, Janata Dal (Secular) - one, BSR Congress - one and Independents – two

Hirekerur Town Panchayat (16): Congress - four, Janata Dal (Secular) - two, KJP - seven, BSR Congress - one and Independents - two.
