Congress sweeps ULBs in DK, Udupi

MANGALORE: A Congress wave was evident in its near total sweep of urban local body polls in coastal districts of DK and Udupi that saw it win eight out of 11 urban local bodies including the prestigious Mangalore City Corporation and Udupi City Municipal Council. In the results announced on Monday, of the 284 wards on offer in these 11 bodies, Congress romped home in 157 wards and the BJP was a distant second winning only 106 wards.

It was a near total rout of the BJP in Dakshina Kannada that saw it retain only Sullia town panchayat while conceding the Mangalore City Corporation, Puttur, Moodbidri, Bantwal and Ullal town municipal councils, and Belthangady town panchayat to the Congress. In Udupi, the BJP conceded the Udupi CMC to Congress, while winning in Kundapur TMC and Saligrama TP. Congress won Karkala TMC by a wafer thin margin of one seat.

In Dakshina Kannada, Congress won 108 out of 189 ULB seats on offer in seven civic bodies as against 63 that BJP won. JD(S) won six seats, including two in MCC, CPM 2 including one in MCC, while the independents won in 4 and others six seats. Interestingly, the Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI) contesting polls for the first time opened its account in MCC at the expense of Gulzaar Banu, Mayor from Congress in Katipalla North ward.

In Udupi, Congress won 49 out of 95 wards, while BJP won in 43 wards. The CPM won in two wards and Harish Ram, an independent was successful in making his entry to the CMC there. In the prestigious contest that mattered, BJP won in 35 out of 60 wards on offer in MCC, relegating BJP to 20 seats. As far as Udupi CMC in concerned, Congress ensured BJPs worse ever performance there winning 22 out of 35 wards, restricting BJP to 11 wards.

Congress win in MCC was soured by the fact that K Ashraf, former Mayor and president of Mangalore City Corporation announced his resignation to the post notwithstanding the fact that Congress won in 13 out of 20 wards in the block. Loss in party's pocket borough wards of 43-Kudroli and 44-Bunder ward that Ashraf represented in the last council was the last straw for Ashraf to handle, who promptly announced his decision to step down.

Allotted Rs 20L, BMC fails to spend even a rupee

BHOPAL: Eleven months on, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has failed to spend even a rupee out of Rs 20L allocated for beautification of 10 Number Market and installation of a fountain. The provision was made in corporation's last year budget.

The delay has apparently been due to ignorance of the local corporator and apathy of officials.

Interestingly, when TOI contacted mayor and local corporator to know their response they passed on the buck. Mayor Krishna Gaur said, "The corporator must not have claimed the amount, that is the reason why it could not be spent."

Contrary to this, municipal corporator of the area, Archana Pandey said, "Despite making repeated demands the officials didn't sanction funds for development".

A shopkeeper at 10 Number Market, Shanshank Sharma said, "It is common man who is at the receiving end. He is denied of basic civic facilities at one of city's most conjested market.

Arti Raghuvanshi a visitor told TOI, "The market looks messed up and plans for installation of a fountain here has failed to materialize."

Reva Shrivastav said, "It's the nearest market from residential areas, so it's convenient to come here rather than going to MP Nagar but things turn embarrassing when beggars chase you or when you step over garbage piled up."

Ravi Shankar a shopkeeper at 10 Number Market said, "Few days back, a fire broke out in the market which caused heavy losses to shopkeepers. At least the, market should be equipped to cope up with such situations."

Armendra Singh Chouhan, a shopkeeper at 10 number said, "This is a crucial market that caters to the needs of population in new Bhopal. All essentials are easily available here. It's unfortunate that the area which is of commercial importance has been neglected so far by administrations."
