Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to initiate action against 11 plumbers

PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will take action against 11 plumbers who were caught playing cards while on duty by the special flying squads appointed by municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi.

Pardeshi said, "The special flying squad led by assistant commissioner Satish Kulkarni was conducting surprise inspection in ward no 39 when they found 11 plumbers playing cards in the attendant's room of the water tank in Nehrunagar. The squad also found that while the game of cards was going on, a resident was waiting outside seeking help for some water supply related problem."

He said that strict action will be taken against the plumbers for not executing their duties.

"Kulkarni has submitted his report and action will be taken on it. Some plumbers appeared to be under the influence of alcohol," Pardeshi said.

Pardeshi has directed all the six assistant commissioners to conduct surprise inspections of municipal properties and offices on a weekly basis to check whether the employees and officials working there were performing their duties properly or not. To ensure an element of surprise Pardeshi randomly directs any assistant commissioner in the morning to conduct a surprise inspection in any area of the city.

The assistant commissioner has to submit a report of his findings to the municipal commissioner's office in the evening itself. A special cell has been created in the municipal commissioner's office to keep a computerised record of these reports. It directs the civic officials concerned to take action to remove the shortcomings found during the inspection at the municipal properties and also keeps a record of action taken.

Civic body says Aadhar not compulsory for gas connections, admissions, bank accounts yet

VADODARA: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has asked citizens not to fall prey to demands of UID Aadhar cards for various purposes. The civic body has clarified that furnishing card for any scheme or purpose has not been made compulsory yet in the city.

The VMC is presently conducting the process of issuing the cards through its ward offices. It is also looking to start more centres for the convenience of citizens. But it came to the notice at these centres that some citizens were rushing there out of panic after some gas agencies, schools, banks or other organisations demanded Aadhar cards from those approaching them.

Citizens have been asked to approach the deputy municipal commissioner (general) of the civic body if the cards are demanded from them. The VMC has clarified that a pilot project to use the cards was to be taken up in some districts of the state, but these districts did not include Vadodara.

The civic body has also stated that the pilot project too had been held for now. Also, the project would begin first in the rural areas and only then would cities be included under it. A VMC release stated that action would also be taken against any organization that was found misleading citizens on this front.

Vacancies plague civic body administration

VADODARA: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) conducted a major drive to recruit personnel in its engineering and technical staff, but a plethora of positions is lying vacant in the non-engineering cadres. Around 350 positions are vacant in the civic body as compared to the sanctioned strength.

The vacancies have accumulated over a period of time as recruitments were not conducted as and when personnel retired or left service. The largest number of vacancies exists in the clerical staff.

According to figures, 160 vacancies exist at the level of senior clerks and 142 at the level of junior clerks. Also, there are around 40 vacancies on other posts. These include those of the personal assistant to the municipal commissioner, an election officer, tourist officer, assistant municipal secretaries, a deputy assessor and tax collector, stores superintendent, materials officer, administrative officer (gas) and others.

VMC officials said that while the vacancies did exist, the civic body's preliminary focus remained on ensuring that its services are not affected. "Key posts like those of ward officers, assistant municipal commissioner and engineering staff are filled up regularly to ensure that basic amenities are provided without hiccups to citizens," an official said.

Sources also admitted that many posts that were lying vacant did not need a full-time person and other officials had been given the responsibility. They added that these were largely people with whom citizens did not have to deal with directly and were more responsible for administrative work within the civic body.

VMC commissioner Ashwini Kumar said that recruitment was an ongoing process and the civic body had already begun with recruitments on senior positions. "This will continue. But the vacancies have not affected our day-to-day working in a major way," he said.
