Notification for urban body elections

RANCHI: The election commission of Jharkhand issued notification for holding elections against 610 positions of 28 urban local bodies in the state on April 7 here on Wednesday. Addressing mediaperons, commissioner SD Sharma said all formalities related to elections must be completed before April 15. Date for counting has been fixed as April 11.

Notice related to the election would be published on March 12 following which candidates can file nomination till March 19. The date for withdrawal of names is March 21 whereas symbols will be allotted to the candidates the next day.

During the elections 15, 94,018 voters would decide the fate of 582 ward councillors and 28 mayors or president of district council. Sharma said elections would not be conducted in eight urban local bodies this time where the elections were held in 2010. "Elections to urban local bodies are held every five years hence these eight places would go for the polling in 2015," he said.

Reiterating the commitment of the commission for conducting free and fair polls, Sharma said 3785 polling stations are being erected for the purpose of voting in which on an average 500 voters would turn up in each booth.

Home secretary JB Tubid and ADGP AK Sinha were also present during the press briefing. Tubid said that central para military force along with district police would be deployed at the polling booth to maintain law and order and ensure that the elections are held in a secure environment.

Officials of Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon meet over IAF zone issue

GURGAON: The municipal commissioner Ashok Sangwan on Wednesday held a meeting with officials from all departments in the city, including official from the Air Force to freshly demarcate the area that falls within the 900 metres of the IAF depot. While the Supreme Court has put a ban on any sort of construction activity in this restricted zone, the high court has asked the MCG to freshly demarcate the zone.

In the meeting the commissioner directed all senior MCG officials to visit various areas in this zone and if they come across any freshly built structures, they should immediately pull it down. In case of a repeat offender, the commissioner has directed a contempt of court case to be filed against the defaulter.

"The new commissioner held the meeting to take stock of the steps taken in accordance with high court order. While most of the steps that we told the court that we would take have already been implemented, while a couple of them are yet to be taken. These include freshly demarcating the 900 metres zone. We will hold a meeting with all departments concerned shortly and after seeking their opinion in this matter, we will begin the demarcation process," said a spokesperson.

The municipal commissioner also requested senior police officials who were present in the meeting to readily provide adequate police force whenever the MCG enforcement team goes to a spot to demolish a building. In the recent past there have been several instances where the team had to beat a hasty retreat because the agitated mob started pelting stones at them. The cops assured the MCG commissioner that they will provide the needed armed force whenever requested.

Ward committee members fear public complaints?

BANGALORE: Are ward committees members shunning away from their responsibilities? It has to be believed if the talks on more than 100 ward committee members wanting to tender their resignations.

It can be recalled that the High Court of Karnataka had recently said that it was not just the BBMP commissioner and Mayor's responsibility to ensure clearance of garbage, the responsibility will be fixed on the ward committee members. "If the garbage is not cleared public can lodge a case with the High Court and the take court would initiate appropriate action against the ward committee members," the HC had pointed out, Fearing the stringent action by the court the members of the ward committee are planning to resign. In the wake of this Mayor Venkatesh Murthy said that a meeting will be convened with the elected and nominated.

"The ward committee members are afraid that they might have to face public complaints and legal battle. In many wards, we have not done the selection of members democratically, due to lack of sufficient time. Thus the chosen members are worried and wanting to resign. Such complaints can be politically motivated also. We have called for a meeting to pacify them," said Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy.
