Kozhikode corporation plans gates at city's entry points

KOZHIKODE: The corporation authorities are considering a proposal to erect gates and arches on the entry points to the city. The proposal included in the 12th five year plan of the civic body is expected to take off in 2013-2014 fiscal.

Though the civic body had set aside around Rs 7 lakh to erect entry gates and arches at the selected entry points at the corporation boundaries in the 2012-2013 five year plan, the proposal has been shifted to the next financial year considering the limited time got for the project preparation and execution.

The project to erect arches and entry gate was proposed by the working group for the art, culture, heritage protection and beautification.

The civic body would involve the public in selecting designs of the proposed entry gate and arches. The locations of the entry gate and arches will be made after holding talks with experts and corporation officials.

According to Kozhikode corporation office, the city corporation has a total of 118.2 sq km area following the merger of three grama panchayats of Beypore, Cheruvannur-Nallalam, Beypore and Elathur with the corporation.

The boundary of the civic body begins from the Chaliyar river in the north to Korappuzha in the south.

Adv Chembil Vivekanandan, chairman of the Working Group for the art, culture, heritage protection and beautification said that four to six entry gates and arches will be installed on the roads which enters to the city corporation limit.

"We have already held talks with experts like architects and engineers and a detailed proposal will be made by April. The entry gates and arches will be placed on the roads where widening is not taking place,'' he said.

Says every effort will be made to beautify Karimnagar.

Karimnagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner M. Vanaja Devi has said that the district administration would take all measures for the development and beautification of municipal parks.

Speaking at a Face-to-Face programme organised by the Lok Satta district unit and Karimnagar Consumers’ Council here on Sunday, she said that she would not tolerate encroachment of municipal parks by anyone and take stern action against land-grabbers.

The Municipal Commissioner said that she would check corruption in the Corporation and implement the Citizens Charter effectively. Expressing concern over the damage caused to the roads in the town, she said that she would soon convene a meeting with the contractor who was executing the underground drainage works.

She said that she would also convene a meeting with the builders and owners of various apartments and take corrective measures following several irregularities in the construction and maintenance of apartments in the town.

She said that they would take measures for the plantation of more trees and eradicate the use of plastics. She also said that she would accord priority for the sanitation.

During the programme, she was flooded with several complaints such as encroachment of roads by small-time vendors, auto-wallahs and other traders, use of motor pumps by residents to draw more drinking water from taps, maintenance of street lights, etc.

The residents also appealed to her to stop plying of tractors during the morning hours in the town as they caused accidents.

She was also requested to impose tax on vinyl posters in the town.

Lok Satta district president N. Srinivas, general secretary T. Rajamouli, Karimnagar Consumers Council leaders Prakash Holla, R. Chandra Prabhakar, Apartments Welfare Association leader Kumara Swamy, retired DRO Bandari Ankaiah and others participated in the programme.
