Municipal Corporation takes up Vishwamitri project with minister

VADODARA: The issue of Vishwamitri rejuvenation was the highlight of discussion between the top brass of Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) and urban development minister Anandiben Patel on Thursday. Experts from VahoVishwamitriAbhiyan (VVA) project, a non-governmental initiative also participated in the deliberations.

Both the VMC and the VVA made presentations before Patel regarding the project with the VMC focusing on its short-term and long-term planning for rejuvenation of the river. The VVA too made a presentation on its suggestions for work on the river.

Officials said that the VMC gave details of how within a time span of three years it proposed to make the river alive again. Its focus was ensuring that untreated sewage water and garbage was not dumped into the river.

Also, it gave details of how it planned to relocate slum dwellers on the banks of the river.

The longer objectives of the VMC's plan include developing its banks with recreational and other facilities. It also plans to have a crocodile park.

Sources said that Patel suggested that the VMC rope in experts who had experience of handling similar projects. She was also of the opinion that various aspects of the project should be planned and analyzed threadbare before beginning work in a major way on the project.

28 corporators in poll fray for 14 district planning council posts

NAGPUR: After a lull in political activity at Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), corporators are back in election mode with district planning council (DPC) polls on February 20. Some 28 corporators are in the fray for the 14 posts. There are 20 posts for NMC in DPC, but six corporators have already been elected unopposed.

Additional collector Asha Pathan said three corporators from OBC category - Jagdish Gwalbansi, Sanjay Balpande and Sanjay Mahakalkar - had been elected unopposed. Three women from OBC category - Meen Tidke, Rekha Barahate and Jayashree Wadibhasme - have also been elected opposed.

There are another 20 posts in DPC for local body members. Seventeen for Nagpur zilla parishad (ZP) members while three are for the thirteen municipal councils in the district. Of the seventeen ZP seats, three candidates have already been elected unopposed.

The voting system is preferential and quite complicated. Many public representatives may end up casting invalid votes. Pathan said the priority of the candidates should be either written in English or Marathi numerals. A mixture of the two will make the vote invalid. The voter has to compulsorily give a candidate the first priority else his or her vote will become invalid. There are several other complications in this voting system.

There is one post for SC corporator of NMC. Four members; Wasudeo Dhoke, Prasanna Borkar, Murlidhar Meshram and Raju Lokhande are in the fray. For the two posts of SC women category, six corporators - Sujata Kombade, Manisha Ghodeswar, Saroj Bahadure, Satyabhama Lokhande, Vidya Lonare and Anita Wankhede have thrown their hats in the ring.

The election for six seats in open category is the most complicated and tough. There are nine candidates - Dipak Kapse, Aslam Khan, Kishor Gajbhiye, Sandip Joshi, Harish Dikondwar, Gautam Patil, Duneshwar Pethe, Parinay Fuke and Purushottam Hazare -in the fray.

No less tough is the election for five women in open category for which nine members are in fray. They are Iftikar Ashrafu, Prerna Kapse, Manisha Kothe, Harshala Jaiswal, Alka Dalal, Divya Dhurde, Sarika Nandurkar, Kiran Rodge and Shabana Parveen.

There will be two polling booths for 145 corporators in new Setu Kendra in district collectorate premises. The first is for corporators representing ward no 1 to 72 and second for those representing ward no 73 to 145.
