City to get rock garden, fountain

May 18: The city will soon get a rock garden and a musical fountain on the lines of the ones in Singapore. Announcing this here on Tuesday, horticulture minister Umesh Katti said Rs 65 crore project will be implemented by BBMP, Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and the state horticulture department.

Mr Katti said the blueprint for the Rs 30 crore rock garden with seating arrangements is already in place. The musical fountain would come up at a cost of Rs 35 crore, he said. “The musical fountain will be done like the ones in Singapore,” he added.

In 2009-10, Lalbagh Botanical Gardens collected a revenue of Rs 2.03 crore by way of entry fee and flower shows. Hopcoms will open 100 more retail outlets to meet the increased demand for fruits and flowers. The minister said officials are hunting for locations to set up these retail outlets.

Prisons in eight district headquarters including Shimoga, Hassan and Davanagere would be shifted to their outskirts at a cost of Rs 40 crore, said Mr Katti, who is also the prisons the minister.
