Chandigarh:  The Municipal Corporation is contemplating extending the benefit of day markets to more sectors of the city. The civic body will soon be writing to the UT Deputy Commissioner for allowing markets in Sectors 49, 51, 52 and Dadumajra.

A discussion on the issue was held during a meeting of the Apni Mandi and Day Market Committee of the civic body on Monday. The day markets provide a platform to vendors and farmers to sell fruits and vegetables directly to residents.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of councillor Jagjit Singh Kang and attended by other members of the committee.

Members decided that the feasibility of starting markets would be discussed with the sub-divisional engineer concerned in the next meeting of the committee.

After this, a letter would be written to the deputy commissioner. The aim is primarily to cater to residents of southern sectors.

The committee also decided that the slips will be issued to vendors up to 5 pm and the enforcement staff will take action against defaulters.

Certification regarding verification of weights and scales will be obtained by the UT Weight and Measurement department by each vendor by June 7 and after that an inspection will be carried out by the committee members for checking violations.

Appropriate legal action will be taken against erring vendors if any discrepancy is found. It was further decided that a water tanker will be provided by the Public Health Wing of the civic body at the markets.
