Mumbai:  The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday demolished 140 structures near Irla nullah in Juhu to make way for the BRIMSTOWAD project. These structures were situated on the edges of the nullah. The 500-metre stretch on the Gulmohar Road was cleared and handed over to the Storm Water Drains department, said ward officer Ramesh Pawar.

Of the 280 families living in the area, 103 are eligible for rehabilitation, said Ramesh Pawar. Of these 103 families, 50 have been rehabilitated in Jogeshwari and the rest of them have been rehabilitated in Dahisar, he said. No homes have been provided to those who had come in the area after 1995, said Pawar.

Though the Irla pumping station is ready, the nullah has not been widened yet. Hence, the areas of JVPD and Vile Parle are prone to floods, he said. The Irla pumping station is expected to start functioning in a week, said officials.

As part of the Brihanmumbai Storm Water Drainage (BRIMSTOWAD) project, the pumping station has been built at key catchments areas near Irla nullah in Andheri.

According to officials, Irla pumping station project will bring respite to residents of Milan Subway, Andheri East, Santacruz West, areas near Vile Parle station and Sahar Road Junction.
