Work on Karanakodam bridge begins

KOCHI: With the KSEB authorities removing the 110 KV transformer, which was the last hurdle to start the construction of Karanakodam bridge, the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has started the work. The project, which will be instrumental in the construction of a four-lane highway from Pullepady to Thammanam, is expected to be completed within 100 days.

The KCCI has already started the piling and levelling work of the four-lane bridge. The formal inauguration of the work will be held on Wednesday. “We will complete the work within 100 days provided there is no hindrance to the work,” said K M Abdulla, chairman, KCCI.

The prospects for a four-lane bridge at Karanakodam on the Thammanam-Pullepady stretch took a new turn in June, 2010, with the Kochi Corporation signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KCCI.  The bridge is expected to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1.5 crore. After completion, the KCCI will be allowed to construct arches at both the ends of the bridge for displaying its name.

Though there is a single-lane bridge at Karanakodam now, it is in a dilapidated condition. Abdullah said the existing bridge will not be demolished until the completion of the new bridge. The construction of the new four-lane bridge is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the Thammanam-Pullepady corridor.
