‘Chandigarh fast turning into world class city’

Chandigarh has gone a long way in providing basic services to the citizens ever since its formation, said Mayor Anu Chatrath after unfurling the national flag at the Municipal Corporation Complex on the occasion of Independence Day on Sunday.

After congratulating and conveying her wishes to the people of the city on the 64th Independence Day, she said: “Chandigarh is exploring its potential day by day and is attaining an international recognition and the support of people is necessary to realise all its dreams.”

Talking about the achievements of the civic body, Chatrath said: “The city has been adjudged as first by the Union Ministry of Urban Development scoring 73.48 points and is categorised with BLUE city colour code on the basis of National rating survey data on city sanitation. E-tendering system has been successfully introduced in the MC.

She further said that in the unauthorised colonies, the work of providing basic amenities like drinking water, streetlights and footpath will be undertaken shortly. Latest fire fighting equipment will be included in the Fire and Emergency Department.

“4,936 trees, 26,696 shrubs, 530 climbers and 41,879 Rft hedge are to be planted by the end of February 2011 on various roads, parks, community centres, colonies, villages etc. About 200 parks in various sectors are also to be developed by providing children play equipments, railings, huts and benches,” she added.

Mayor said that MC has also proposed for transfer of Departments namely Primary Education, Primary Health, V-3 roads and all big parks and green belts from the City Administration to MC.
