7 towns to be developed as model cities

Special Correspondent

Regional Director holds review meeting with Municipal Commissioners.

Ravindra Babu, Regional Director of the Department of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Rajahmundry division, on Tuesday informed that seven municipal towns have been selected for development as model cities in the region.

Speaking at a meeting of the Municipal Commissioners from the Rajahmundry region, comprising East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna districts, he said the civic administrations in these select-seven cities were expected to shape them as model cities in any one of citizen services such as water supply, sanitation and public health etc.

Saying that the civic authorities in the region fared better in collection of property taxes last year, the Regional Director appealed to them to repeat a similar performance this year also.

The Commissioners informed him that the demand notices were being prepared for serving on the property owners.

The Regional Director asked the Municipal Commissioners to be transparent in identification of BC voters in their respective towns.

The process of delimitation was completed in all the towns and cities under the Rajahmundry region, except Kakinada and Tanuku.

The number of wards was expected to be up in Kakinada and Tanuku in view of merger of surrounding villages with these urban centres, Mr. Ravindra Babu said.

Election cells

He requested the civic body authorities to open election cells in their respective towns in the light of fast approaching municipal elections.

The Municipal Commissioner of Amalapuram said supply of drinking water in the current summer became a problem in the colonies on the outskirts of the town for want of response from the contractors to bid for hiring of tankers.
