Soon, better roads and pretty parks

Thanks to the Commonwealth Games next year, Delhiites would also be able to enjoy better pedestrian facilities and nice parks, not just the tourists.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has begun streetscaping work which involves installing street furniture and improving and strengthening stretches along the Games venues.

The civic agency would also install information standing panels across the city, would aesthetically improve street poles and fixtures.

Under the plan, many parks in the city would also be beautified and plants of different species planted.

“We have started carrying our streetscaping of Bhishma Pitamah Marg, Lodhi Road from Nizamuddin roundabout to India Habitat Centre, Surajkund Road. This will cost us around Rs 38 crore. The project will be completed by May next year," said MCD commissioner K.S. Mehra.

The total cost of carrying out streetscaping in MCD areas in the city is being estimated at Rs 106 crore.

Work has also started on Maharishi Valmiki Marg, Jagannath Marg, Dilip Singh Marg among others. This will cost the civic agency Rs 26 crore and would be completed around the same time.

"We will strengthen the roads and improve the drainage system alongside it," added Mehra.

Greening of central verges and general upgradation will also be a part of this change.

"Upgradation work of central verges at Deshbandhu Gupta Road, New Rohtak Road, Arya Samaj Road would be completed this year," said a senior MCD official.
