Following the decision of Punjab and Haryana High Court, the MC Commissioner, AK Sinha has decided to stop holding of Sunday car bazar at Feroze Gandhi market. The members have been given time till February 19. Sinha, while confirming the same, said, “We will offer them a place and if they did not find it to their liking, they are supposed to make their own arrangements.”

It is learnt that MC will offer them a space on Hambaran Road every Sunday.

Apart from this, even the car bazar shopkeepers are parking around 200 cars on a daily basis in the Feroze Gandhi market on the pavements outside their shops, which are meant for walking. Sinha said, “This will also be checked side-by-side because this area is to be given to the commuters.”

It needs to be mentioned that about four days ago, the MC team had gone to install grills in a few areas which the car bazar shopkeepers had broken down for their own convenience to make an easy entry into the market and also to park their vehicles. However it closed only one opening towards Feroze Gandhi market and the rest of the openings were not touched because the cars were parked there. Shopkeepers were given two days’ time to remove their vehicles but so far nothing has been done by them. Sinha however categorically said that strict action would be taken in this direction as well. Last time, however, shopkeepers had made the MC team retreat by staging protests and holding traffic

It needs to be mentioned that property and traders’ welfare association of Feroze Gandhi market had filed a case in the High Court regarding misuse of the parking area by the car bazar shopkeepers and many other violations.

Parking lot auctioned
The MC has carried out an auction of the parking area in Feroze Gandhi market. This has been allotted to one Amarjit Singh for Rs 66 lakhs against reserve prize of Rs 60 lakh. Four bidders had participated in auction.
