‘Give JnNURM touch to developmental works’

Mysore, August 4, DHNS:

Urban Development, Law and Parliamentary Affairs and District-In-Charge Minister S Sureshkumar on Wednesday said that works being taken up out of funds made available under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) scheme look like works that are implemented by Mysore City Corporation (MCC), without any speciality.

He was addressing a meeting convened here to monitor progress of works being done out ofRs 100 crore special grant released by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and also of JnNURM works here. The minister pointed out that JnNURM has a special significance.

Only the works being undertaken by KSRTC reflect the importance of JnNurm but it is absent in other works. The drinking water works are kicking controversies rather than progress. This should not happen. Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta, who is also special officer of JnNURM works, has to take special interest in those works.

Sureshkumar said the MCC, at the time of executing drinking water schemes should not only take the areas that come under its jurisdiction but also areas developed by Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) and private realtors. This would help in solving drinking water problems in the coming days.

Officers of MCC informed the meeting that a project has been evolved at ` 108.81 crore to bring water from Kabini. Already, tenders are finalised for works worth Rs 81.7 crore and the works are in progress. `24.49 crore in first stage and ` 43.86 crore in second stage had been released. Replying to a suggestion from MLA Tanveer Sait that water should be distributed to villages that are situated along with the pipeline drawn from River Kapila, MCC Commissioner K S Raykar said already this has been incorporated in the project.

Compensation

Officers of Vani Vilasa Water Works said they are giving Rs 2 lakh compensation for farmers so that they do not come in the way of putting pipeline. The works would start soon after giving full compensation to farmers affected.

When Mayor Sandesh Swamy objected that officials were not giving information about the progress of jnNURM works to elected representatives, the minister directed the officials to bring to the notice of people’s representatives on regular basis. Henceforth, the review meeting would be held once in three months.

KSRTC Divisional Controller Srinivas said the corporation has been running 150 buses purchased under jnNURM scheme and providing quality service to commuters without charging any additional money. There has been positive response from the citizens about new buses. In fact, KSRTC was given Rs 108 crore under jnNURM scheme with which works on eight bus terminals had been taken up. The City Bus Terminal and R S Naidu Bus Terminal are ready. Other bus terminals would be completed by October this year. Steps are taken to build 100 new bus shelters in the city. Sureshkumar suggested Srinivas to build a small shop and toilet at all the proposal bus shelters.

Outer ring road

MUDA Commissioner P C Jayanna said the authority has taken up construction of outer ring road at a cost of Rs 219 crore and other developmental works. Besides, plan of action has been drawn to complete 9 km stretch between Bannur Road and Nanjangud Road.

Raykar said as many as 138 works had been taken up out of Rs 100 crore special grant released by the CM of which 113 works are completed.

The minister directed the MCC to prepare special plan to build assets for the next  ` 100 crore special grant to be released by the State Government soon.

MLA Tanveer Sait, MLCs Siddaraju, Go Madhusudhan, Mayor Sandesh Swamy, Deputy Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath and Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta were present.

‘Rs.600 cr. to develop Kadapa district'

Special Correspondent

KADAPA: Kadapa Mayor P. Raveendranatha Reddy asserted on Wednesday that Kadapa Municipal Corporation was striving relentlessly to develop infrastructure in Kadapa city and said that Rs. 600 crore was being spent to develop the district.

Presiding over the corporation general body meeting, the Mayor announced cancellation of a contract awarded to Sai Maurya Infrastructure Private Ltd. in June 2008 for construction of a mega shopping mall on old RIMS premises. The contract was cancelled as the firm was yet to start work on the shopping mall, though it was scheduled for completion by now, within 36 months and failed to pay the lease amount to the corporation, he said.

Referring to sanitation in Kadapa city, MLC P. Subba Reddy resented unbridled dumping of garbage collected in rickshaws in the Buggavanka stream, posing health hazards to people living in neighbouring areas in its vicinity.

The Mayor warned sanitary workers of stern action if they continued to dump garbage in the stream.

Corporators Putha Venkatasubba Reddy, M.V.R. Prasad Reddy, Karim Jilani, Shamsher and Maqbul Basha alleged that people in Indiramma colonies at Azadnagar, Cherlopalle and Ukkayapalli were facing hardships owing to improper drinking water, drainage and power supply.

Replying to a query by a corporator Harinarayana on reports of irregularities in sanction of pucca houses at Alamkhanpalle, the housing DE said an inquiry was in progress and cases would be registered against those guilty.

The meeting resolved to give no objection certificates to allot 12.26 cents of land in Mamillapalle panchayat to government drivers.

Spotlight on Iraveli slums

KOCHI:  Iraveli, one of the wards in West Kochi, has a number of slums.

The condition of the four main slums - Thashkent, Panan, Thuruthy and Konchery - remains pathetic. Most of the residents of the area are labourers who work in the fishing sector.

According to M S Girish, councillor of Iraveli, much work has been carried out in these areas. “A number of public toilets have been built and many have been renovated.

Development activities have also been carried out utilising the People’s Planning fund. In all, 105 houses were built under the BSUP scheme. Another 16 houses were built using the JNNURM fund. The lighting problems in the area and the road renovation works were solved to an extent using the division fund.” He says that 63 families were rehabilitated under the multihousing scheme using various funds. These families were rehabilitated in the Iraveli from the Kalvathy slum area. Councillors from both the areas claim to have worked for this scheme. “An Area Development Scheme hall was built for the Kudumbashree utilising the NSDP fund. The Iraveli Mehboob Park was redesigned and a playground was introduced.

The division fund was also utilised for building and renovating the drainage network.” However the area has many other issues to be addressed. Water shortage is the most important among them. Housing also needs to be developed. Some of the residents allege that the slum development programmes were not carried out effectively in the area.

Lack of proper sanitation facilities and insufficient number of public taps are also the burning issues which will be the main issues in the coming elections.
