GVMC keen on taking over Meghadrigedda

 G.V. Prasada Sarma

Seeks the nod of Irrigation Department

Creation of storage space helps the corporation tackle crisis during summer

It also has a task of providing space for water from Polavaram Left Canal

VISAKHAPATNAM: With its reservoirs silted and storage capacity restricted, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is looking at improving them. It also has the onerous task of finding storage capacity for the water to be realised from the Polavaram Left Canal. The Polavaram project has been going through a re-tendering process.

The canal work taken up in the district has not been completed.

As part of improving the capacity of its reservoirs, the GVMC has written to the Irrigation Department to hand over the maintenance of the Meghadrigedda reservoir, with a capacity of 1 tmcft, to it. It intends to improve the capacity by 0.5 tmcft by de-silting it.

The Irrigation Department had asked the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration for his remarks on the proposal, Chief Engineer B. Jayarami Reddy told The Hindu.

During the severe water scarcity in summer, the GVMC had faced criticism from political parties that it failed to create space for storage for water from the lift scheme at Kateru on the Godavari when water was available. The creation of more space will help it tide over such situations in future and also comes in handy as and when the Polavaram Left Canal work is completed.

“We are firm on improving Meghadrigedda reservoir and the proposal would be seriously pursued at higher levels,” said an official of the GVMC.

Besides the reservoir, the capacity of the Kanithi Balancing Reservoir is also to be increased by double from the existing 0.5 tmcft capacity.

Another reservoir, by the side of the existing one at steel plant, has to be constructed to augment the capacity.

New reservoirs

Apart from the two, nine other places have been tentatively identified for reservoirs for the Polavaram Left Canal, and they include existing tanks as well.

A major new reservoir is proposed near Makavarapalem with a capacity of 4 tmcft.

As the Left Canal is a flood flow canal, it is proposed to store 14 tmcft in the reservoirs identified/created for the purpose.

Detailed report

The detailed project report is expected to be readied in the next three months.

The proposals will be included in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission Plus that is to be the continuation of the current urban mission that ends in 2012.

Panchkula:  All-weather pools: huda to construct pools for children and adults at recreational park in mansa devi complex

Panchkula residents will no longer have to wait for the summer to enjoy a swim as the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has planned to come up two all-weather swimming pools, a first not only for Panchkula but for the state, next year.

An adult (30x70 feet) and 20x30 feet children’s pool will be constructed at the recreational park in Sector 1, Mansa Devi Complex.

Other than usual features such as glazed tiles and a water filter for purification, a unique feature of the indoor pools is that the water would be heated using solar energy with electricity as a backup.

“In order to conserve energy, we will be installing solar panels on the building roof to heat the water. A provision to use electricity as well, particularly during monsoon or winter season when there is fog, will also be there but its use will be limited as far as possible,” said a senior HUDA official.

Officers add that if the all-weather pools become a success in the township, HUDA would contemplate coming up with more such projects in other cities like Gurgaon. “We have finalised the blueprint and the finances too have been approved. The construction will start shortly and we hope residents can enjoy a splash by next summer,” said the official. At present, Panchkula has three swimming pools, none of which is all-weather. A spa and jacuzzi will also be set up in the vicinity of the pool, along with a squash court and gymnasium. Till now, people had to shell out exorbitant amounts for spas in private clubs and saloons and the Golf Club in Sector 3 has only one squash court.

City to have 2 Logistics parks

Want to grab a bite? How about a trip to the truckstop outside town? For those who think truckstops are grimy down-at-heel places, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Authority (HMDA) is planning a makeover, building two Logistic Parks replete with dhabas, cafeterias and restaurants cheek-by-jowl with truck workshops, petrol pumps and weighbridges.

The HMDA has proposed to develop these parks at Batasingaram and Mangalapally on the city outskirts. These Logistic Parks would be developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The HMDA has invited Request for Proposal (RFP) and set September 15 as the deadline for submitting bids.

Speaking to Express, HMDA officials said they have identified 40 acres of land at Batasingaram village, Abdullapurmet in Ibrahimpatnam mandal, located adjacent to the NH-9 and about 7 kms from the Outer Ring road (ORR ) towards Vijayawada. It would be built at a cost of Rs 35 crore.

The other one would be developed at Mangalapally located near ORR towards Nagarjuna Sagar in an area of 22 acres. It would be developed at a cost of Rs 20 crore.

The successful bidder should complete the two Logistic Parks in two years from the date of signing of the concession agreement, an HMDA official added.

Once completed, the parks would have truck parking for about 500 trucks, warehousing in 1 lakh sq ft, cold-storage facilities for storing 4,000 MT of goods, office complex for operators, automobile service centres and accessories, vehicle testing centre, fire safety services, driver amenities, dormitories and accommodation for up to 200-300 persons.

They would also have support facilities like internal road network, parking areas with hard pavement to sustain truck/trailer loads, security, water supply, noise and air pollution prevention arrangements, rain-water harvesting, sewage treatment, solid waste management, landscaping and other services. Officials informed the RFP would be issued from August 2 to 26 and the last date for receipt of queries is August 20.

The HMDA will then hold a pre-bid meeting and site visits on August 20.
